With a Tim Shaw-designed humbucker for big electric guitar tones and a variety of acoustic setups, gamers will have a range of opportunities at their fingertips.
We talked with Billy Martinez, VP Category Supervisor (Acoustic and Squier Departments) at Fender, about how the Acoustasonic Jazzmaster complies with its namesake’s speculative steps while adventuring into the new tonal area.
Often used to press the limits of the sonic expedition, the Jazzmaster is the guitar of choice of many of the renowned, enduring musicians of the indie songs scene, from Kevin Guards to Thurston Moore to J Mascis. How do you commemorate that background, materializing that testing ethos into this unique model?
What does the Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster body give you from a construction perspective?
The more considerable body enabled us to offer more unique voices and give the Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster its identity within the Acoustasonic system. Right away, players will notice that the acoustic sound it creates has a bolder sound without being connected. Layer in the electronic devices, and it’s easy to see that the Jazzmaster body took the voicings to a whole new level. We’re excited to see how guitar players will use it to produce their sound.
How authentic are the acoustic voices in Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster compared with the Telecaster or Stratocaster models?
There are comparable voices in Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster guitar, and because the Jazzmaster has a more extensive body form, they’ll sound various. That is the great thing about these tools. The guitars in their analog forms affect the tonal qualities, and each [model] has its own identity.
How would you certainly explain the lo-fi voicings? Existed a beginning point for inspiration?
In Position 2A, we could use the more extensive body form to stand together with the under-saddle piezo pick-up. The guitar serves as a conventional acoustic guitar with its tonal abilities. Roll the mix handle clockwise, and we produced a sound that’s raw and in your face by including some grit and gain to the piezo pick-up, which I think sounds fantastic.
How does the pick-up system in Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster work?
In Position 1, we utilize the Acoustasonic Shawbucker pick-up for the electric tones. In Settings 2, 4 and 5, we use the under-saddle piezo pick-up to catch the acoustic tones. Position 3A uses the same under-saddle pick-up but then assimilates the body noticing pick-up, using both pick-ups with each other to produce a powerful tone.
Existed any unexpected learnings when placing with each other model?
Among the unique points we found, as I mentioned over, is the ability to allow the guitar and piezo to operate in a more traditional style. The body form enabled us to produce a brand-new acoustic body form, which was truly interesting in a guitar with these design aspects.
Provided the unique voicing options and combinations available to gamers, is there a specific rig you suggested?
Firstly, I would play it directly or through a PA audio speaker so the player can hear all the various tone options this guitar has in its most pure form. Another great option is to use an A-B-Y box to use an acoustic amp for the acoustic voices and quickly switch to an electric amp for the electric tones. But honestly, the options are open up to every player’s analysis of what “their sound” is and how they use it.
Do you have a favorite voice or voicing mix?
My favorites are 2b and 3b. I love the lo-fi crunch in 2b because of its uniqueness. Furthermore, I have constantly gravitated towards the acoustic sounds with the body sensing unit fully participating in all 3 models.
